Five Easy Ways of Using Twitter to Get a Superyacht Job

Personal branding is a big part of social media and the sooner you are able to effectively use tools like Twitter in your superyacht job search; the better off you'll be.

So, I've come up with several tips below which I think could work very well if you add this strategy to your existing job search arsenal.

1) Start off with a great Social Media CV

Any search for a job on a superyacht must start with the resume. It's important to compose a strong social media resume. Resume based hosting sites are a new alternative which many applicants looking for jobs on superyachts use today and often with varying amounts of success.

2) Position Yourself Correctly

You absolutely have to present your Twitter presence in the best and most professional way possible to potential industry recruiters. In your twitter profile you should ideally place your job objective and a link to your internet based resume. I advise that you personalize and change your Twitter background so that it's more in line with your objective.

3) Frequently craft Great Tweets

Publish updates such as what it is you are doing in the superyacht industry and how your job search campaign is going. A great way to view this is as your very own internet diary. If you manage to find day work on a yacht or if you've just discovered the most amazing new polish for stainless steel then mention this and include a link to the product.

The point is that you want to put in value wherever you can and engage with your followers by tweeting updates as much as possible (something I still battle with given my yachts dodgy internet connectivity and hectic charter schedule, but I am improving!)

As the Twitter users in the superyacht community become interested in your content, possible employers in your network will be able to see your resume backed up with substantial experience you have had with certain aspects of the job.

4) Start following Others

It is very important that you start observing the messages of other people who are working in the industry. Make it a habit to engage and interact with the people in the industry you are working in. Through this interaction you will build relationships with other crew and future employers, and in this industry it's often a case of who you know, not what you know.

5) Use Twitter Search to Keep Your Finger on the Pulse

Whenever you want to find out what's currently being discussed in the superyacht community (or inside any industry right now) then Twitter search is a great place to go. Search Twitter for specific jobs that you're after. If you're a Stewardess then search for 'Stewardess'.

I've seen a number of deckhand positions being posted on Twitter and amazed that so few people are actively using this feature to market themselves within the industry.

When you go to twitter search you'll probably think that it looks just like Google search. It makes me think that we'll be seeing ads on the right hand side in the not too distant future. Almost certainly. But the point here is that this is a growing community and the way that social media will influence and change the way you and I make decisions in the superyacht industry is only just beginning.
